 Most the time when the engine light comes on everything just keeps working fine. There are instances where things won't keep working fine, then it's time to take the car and immediately. But most of the time if the engine light wasn't on as far as you would be concerned everything would be fine. The answer is simple, put tape over the engine light until something starts acting up. Then remove the tape and take the car in for maintenance.

 You think people would offer me millions of dollars for these fantastic ideas.

 Several of the car manufacturers figured out that people were just ignoring the engine light. So to be bigger jerks, they turn off the cruise control if the engine light is on. Somehow they convince themselves that they're doing us all a big favor. Make the car less drivable because the engine lights on. All they're really proving is that they're stupid. But if you use the cruise control a lot then the tape over the engine light isn't going to really solve the problem. If you drive long distances on boring open highways you want the cruise control. And they want to have control over you and your pocketbook, so it's a tough thing. These guys want to sell you good products but they also want to be evil. It's tough.
